Manuel\, who hails from a family steeped in cinematic history and whose aunt was married to Stanley Kubrick\, reveals that he too has recently uncovered a dark family secret: his father’s uncle was the infamous Nazi filmmaker Veit Harlan\, director of the film “Jud Suss” – banned from screening to the present day and considered the most notorious anti-Semitic propaganda film in history. DESCRIPTION:Click here to register. \n– \nThe Belzec Death Camp was the first of the three Operation Reinhard camps. As the first camp\, Belzec served as the prototype for the two subsequent camps\, Sobibor and Treblinka. Belzec has been called the “forgotten camp”. One of the main reasons is that only three Jews survived. Two gave testimony about their experience at Belzec immediately after the war\, and one of them was murdered right after giving his testimony. Chris Webb is one of the only researchers in the world that has extensively investigated the unique story behind the Belzec Death Camp. \nDuring his talk\, he will present sources that were discovered in recent years and help us to better understand how the camp where over half a million Jews were killed actually operated.  Tali Nates\, Director of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Center\, will share her family’s Holocaust history\, their life in Nowy Targ before the war and their fate during Nazi occupation. Drawing on documents\, family photos\, testimonies and more\, she will explore the story of one family who was murdered in Belzec. \nThis program is in partnership with Liberation 75\, Remember the Women Institute\, the Rabin Chair Forum\, Classrooms Without Borders\, the House of the Wannsee Conference Memorial and Educational Site\, and the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Center.

SUMMARY:8th South Africa - Poland History Conference: On the Edge of Whiteness
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register. \n  \nConference Details \n  \nDr Andrew Macdonald (University of the Witwatersrand) | “Transoceanic Migration to Southern Africa in the Age of Empires” \nThis presentation will take listeners through the ‘big picture’ of sea-born migration to Southern Africa\, focusing on 1880-1920s.  Drawing from unpublished port\, shipping and immigration records\, we will explore the streams and patterns\, and place the “Polish” (or more generally eastern European) experience within wider themes. We will also explore the mechanics of migration and arrival in Southern Africa and show how migrants reshaped the ports and civic life. \nDr Andrew MacDonald is a historian of Southern Africa who\, after initial studies in KwaZulu-Natal and India\, completed his PhD at St John’s College\, University of Cambridge. He first joined Wits in 2012 as a University Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa\, and in 2014 took up his current post in the History department. He researches a variety of migrant networks moving across the Indian Ocean over the long 19th century\, with particular interests in border-control regimes\, the history of smuggling and the social history of southern African ports. His work appears in journals such as Past & Present\, Journal of Southern African Studies\, Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies\,  Proceedings of the British Academy\, the Journal of Overseas Chinese and Kronos\, among others\, and he is currently working on a manuscript on transoceanic migrations to South Africa and the making of the region’s borderlands. At Wits\, Andrew teaches a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in World History\, precolonial and colonial South Africa and Afro-Asian connections since 1700. \n  \nDr Jochen Lingelbach (Bayreuth University\, Germany) | “On the Edges of Whiteness: Polish Refugees in British Colonial Africa During and After the Second World War” \nIn this presentation\, Dr Lingelbach will present key findings from his book\, focusing on the interaction of the Polish refugees with different actors of the hosting colonial societies in East and Central Africa. Despite the intention of colonial officials to isolate the Poles and minimise their interaction with members of the hosting societies\, numerous informal encounters with Africans\, European settlers and others evolved. \nDr ​​Jochen Lingelbach is a postdoctoral research fellow in African History at the University of Bayreuth. He obtained his doctorate at the University of Leipzig with a dissertation on Polish refugees in Africa (published in 2020 with Berghahn Books as “On the Edges of Whiteness. Polish Refugees in British Colonial Africa during and after the Second World War”). Currently he works on the project “Africa in the Global History of Refugee Camps” within the University of Bayreuth’s “Africa Multiple. Reconfiguring African Studies” Cluster of Excellence.

SUMMARY:November Pogrom (Kristallnacht) Remembered
DESCRIPTION:  \nClick here to register. \nTracy Strong Jr. was a 26-year-old American serving as a relief worker in the Vichy internment camps for foreigners in southern France in 1941-42.  When he realised the need to get internees out of the camps rather than improve their conditions in the camps\, he worked with Paster Trocme and others to establish the second “safe house” in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and obtained the release of young internees\, mostly Jewish refugees from Central Europe\, from the notorious camps at Gurs and Rivesaltes. When the deportations from France began\, these Jews were able to escape to Switzerland\, while those who remained in the camps were deported to Drancy and then on to Auschwitz-Birkenau. \nDr. Cristopher Browning is the Frank Porter Graham Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). A specialist on the Holocaust\, Browning is the author of nine books\, including Ordinary Men (1992) and The Origins of the Final Solution (2004). \n  \n
